A unique and profitable twist on Green Cleaning and Recycling… 07-05-2008

Green and environmental sustainability are becoming the key topics in the Cleaning Industry – as well as all other industries. And no two manufacturers are approaching the issue in the same way. One sees the range from “green-washing” – basically a marketing ploy saying all the right buzz-words to make customers think they are green – to those companies who are making an investment to become truly green. But the real winners will be those companies who are not only green themselves, but who can help their customers grow because they are greener.

Rubbermaid Commercial Products, one of the world leaders in cleaning equipment and waste management, has a unique 4-pronged approach in the cleaning sector – that appears to be on the winning track.

Firstly, its products themselves are made, packaged and delivered in an environmentally responsible manner. Eric Singer, Rubbermaid’s Director of Manufacturing explains, “The majority of products are manufactured at our state-of-the-art manufacturing site using extremely energy efficient equipment and there are zero factory emissions, zero acid rain contribution from the factory and no heavy metals in the colorants. Many of our products are made using recycled materials and regrind; we have a full range of Green waste receptacles which include 30% Post Consumer Resin (PCR). For mop heads it’s as much as 100%, while aluminium containers are made up of a minimum of 70% recycled aluminium and steel containers contain a minimum of 30% recycled steel.”

Secondly, Rubbermaid Commercial Products are designed to have a longer useful life than regular products which saves on the money, raw materials and energy needed to replace them. But when they do have to go, most of them can be recycled.

The third point is something many cleaning-chemical companies don’t want you to hear: That you can use less water and chemicals to clean. Most of Rubbermaid Commercial Products are designed to clean more effectively with less water and chemical. Charles Strobel, Rubbermaid’s European Marketing Director explains: “for instance, our Microfibre mopping system cleans better using 95% water and chemicals than cotton string mops. In fact, tests confirm that our Microfibre is so effective, it removes -99.8% of bacteria using water alone. And our latest innovations like the new roller wringer and Pulse™ mopping system are designed to reduce chemical usage between -25% to -50%.” Less water and chemical is not only better for the environment, it helps reduce operating cost and improve profits.

But the fourth point may be the most unique and innovative in the cleaning services sector – and focuses on recycling. For Cleaning Services and Facility Management Companies, recycling can either be a problem and productivity challenge – or a competitive advantage and growth opportunity. Rubbermaid Commercial Products is one of the only cleaning equipment manufacturers to also sell a complete line of recycling waste solutions – and is committed to helping cleaning companies take a proactive stance with recycling to win customers and grow profits.
