Helping the NHS Achieve Greener Cleaning

As well as creating a safe environment that protects the safety, health and wellbeing of both patients and colleagues, NHS Property Services (NHSPS) also has wider aims of reaching net zero by 2040, reducing its carbon footprint by 18% and ultimately driving towards “delivering a greener NHS”.

By partnering with RCP and distribution partner Bunzl Cleaning and Hygiene Supplies (BCHS), NHSPS were looking to dramatically reduce the amount of single-use plastic sent to incineration and landfill each year, while boosting productivity and improving cleaning standards.

HELPING THE NHS ACHIEVE GREENER CLEANING

How did making the switch to more sustainable cleaning deliver results for NHSPS?

After an initial assessment of NHSPS’ cleaning and hygiene team’s requirements, RCP identified that a simple switch to its mopping equipment could significantly reduce plastic waste and water usage, as well as improve efficiency and reduce strain on the workers.

Here were the results:
•    90% reduction in plastic waste
•    90% reduction in water use
•    23% reduction in single-use plastic
•    Reduced strain on staff
•    Reported time savings

How did NHSPS implement more sustainable cleaning?

Trials across an initial five NHSPS sites showed that by upgrading from single-use disposable socket mops to RCP’s HYGEN™ PULSE™ microfibre flat mopping system, the organisation was able to make significant improvements in its environmental impact, reducing plastic waste and water use, both by 90%. When rollout across the wider NHSPS estate is completed, the waste and resource savings will be significant.

How does the HYGEN™ PULSE™ mop kit work?

•    The on-board fluid reservoir of the HYGEN™ PULSE™ Mop Kit allows cleaning and hygiene teams to clean more square feet in less time and eliminates the need for large buckets of water, reducing water usage.
•    The user-controlled release of solution gives operatives on-demand delivery and the microfibre heads remove more dust, dirt and microbes than conventional cleaning products. In fact, the HYGEN™ Microfibre Cloths are proven to remove 99.7% or more of tested viruses and bacteria*, meaning waste and water savings can be achieved without compromising on hygiene.

Given the green light by professionals

In addition to the impressive sustainability savings, feedback from the cleaning operators themselves has also been overwhelmingly positive. In fact, 95% who used the HYGEN™ PULSE™ Mop for more than a week reported reduced strain and time savings, thanks to the ergonomic design, onboard reservoir and user-controlled release of cleaning fluid. They found that floors could be cleaned faster, more easily and more effectively.
